NimmyBell!
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted, I've been swamped under with other projects. However, much of that work will be getting posted in the next few weeks...! Anywho, here's a demo I did from a class I'm teaching on picture book illustration. The point was to show a quick mixed media demo ( pencil, colored pencil, watercolor) — though this is largely water color. I intend to experiment with water color, gouache and pigma pens soon...
This was done in my new hand-made sketchbook and I love it! It was a pain to make but it's the right size for me and I got to put better quality paper in it which will allow me to take more mixed media chances in non-project situations. In other words I can completely screw up and it's no big hassle!
The inspiration comes from my soon-to-be-3-yr old who is in ballet classes. We got to see the class in session for the first time and I took the sketchbook along to get some impressions of toddler and pre-K kids. The other inspiration is that lately Naomi ( Nimmy for short) is in either loves and snuggle everyone mood or get out out of my personal space mood. And she's extremely animated about both. Soooooo she seemed like a ripe candidate for the "Tinkerbell" treatment!

Thanks for the comment dude...
Yea, I wasnt feelin the back legs...they gave me a hard time. How do you feel about them... I dont mind how the actual unicorn turned out...do you?
I might have separated them just a bit, maybe moving the leg opposite the raised one forward just a bit. You'd have the drawings pretty well nailed with that tweak as they're fairly strong now!
Horses are hard! I did a painting for a book cover where they were charging straight forward and it wasn't easy. very tricky!
Thanks for posting some more Lincoln. I'm really fond of character design and I love your work.
Thanks Rogerio! I've got several things in the works to post including a final color on Jerry Loomis and expression and attitude drawings of Roderick. All of those will be up by the end of next week.
great sketch lincoln! i love the loose lines and watercolor! it looks like a work from an old master!
cheers
Hi Brad!
Many Thanks! I'm on a kick of working on mixed media and doing it in the sketchbook. I haven't done a watercolor sketch in well over a decade...I got lucky!
