So after being completely and jaw-droppingly inspired by Andrew Shek's photoshop charcoal brush( check out his blog, Elephant Art— his link is on the side), I decided to give it a go and try and create my own charcoal/pastel brush. I like the results, but it still doesn't function quite as intuitively as actually having a piece of charcoal in my hands...but it can help out for effect in a pinch.
This sketch was knocked out in about an hour and a half, pardon the lack of quality in the drawing here, but I think it at least has a good feel. Kudos to anyone who can name the actress here...
